The Grain Bin Chicken Coop Ultimately it is our intention to have all the chickens living snugly in our vaulted straw bale chicken chalet - but as that was not ready, we needed a temporary chicken coop to house the girls. We decided to construct one using an old grain bin that Annie had salvaged out of a barn we tore down (salvaging wood to help in the construction of our Earthship). The bin was placed on its side, the lid used as an entrance door. On its side, the “building” was nearly 6 feet tall. We then cut a hole for a window, and another for a small chicken entrance door. The door was created by using a sliding piece of plywood with a hook-and-eye to secure it at night. The window was latched as well, as well as the opening covered in chicken wire (in case a raccoon decided to break the glass). To keep it dry, we just nailed a couple of sheet of old corrugated tin onto the side as a roof. Knowing the coons can be persistent, we also nailed metal lathing on the inside the coop - just in case they decided to try to tear a bit of wood off and pull a chicken out through the hole (we have known people that this has happened to... Or rather to their chickens). Inside we constructed a couple of laying boxes, a roosting ladder made of saplings, and hung the feed and water canisters from the ceiling. All in all a snug and secure little night shelter for 20 or so chickens.
