Rare Breed Chickens - 5 Months Old

"Such a Waste..."

We were initially afraid that our chickens might fall prey to marauding raccoons, coyotes, possums or even wild dogs.  Little did we know that it would be our own friendly little Bess that would prove to be the source of destruction.

On July 9th, Bess managed to kill 4 of our lovely little chickens.  I guess it is fine in theory to know that animals (including certain breeds of dogs) are just predisposed to chasing and killing other animals.  But when you see the little critters killed for "sport" - it’s hard to muster any sympathy for the one with blood on her teeth.

Our local farmer friends (including old Doc Richmond - the local vet) have many theories on how to cure a dog of killing chickens.  Most involve tying the dead chicken to the dog and allowing it to rot (the chicken, not the dog).  Bess would have loved that - sort of a "food to go" arrangement.

So we used the collar zapper, bringing the chicken carcass close and zapping her, over and over.  Psych 101 aversion therapy.  Seemed to work, as she gave them a wide berth for several months.  That was, until  September 11th when we had our own little tragedy.

We had been gone a good part of the day, with the dogs inside the Earthship.  Somehow they managed to get the door open and we returned to 10 dead chickens - and discovered Bess in full hunting mode, sneaking up on number 11.  Rosie was cowering by the garage, sure she was going to get the blame.  But this was clearly Bess' work.

So Bess had to go.  She was adopted at the local shelter - hopefully off to become a hunting dog, which was what she was bred to be.
