Rare Breed Chickens - 2 days old
Originally we tried to hatch our own chicks. Annie and Cat faithfully monitored the temperature in the borrowed incubator - turning the eggs we obtained from a friend. After about a month of this - we found we had done something wrong (or everything) and were left with an incubator full of spoiled eggs.
So, we ordered our chicks from McMurray Hatchery and waited. The call came at about 5:30 a.m. on Sunday May 26th. I didn’t realize the Post Office was alive on Sunday... let alone at 5:30 in the morning.
But the chicks had arrived and we were properly summoned. Cat and Annie drug me from my warm bed and we headed off to the Zanesville post office.
A few minutes in and out (through the loading dock) and we had our prize. Once home, Catlyn excitedly opened the box to find 28 little chicks (we had ordered 25 - but the hatchery sent a couple extra... I suspect to ensure that we got at least one rooster of each breed as ordered).
They say there are experts who can sex a chick at birth. We looked these guys over and were clueless. The experts were a bit off as well. As they grew - it turned out that we had 5 roosters (rather than the 2 ordered). But if it had been left to me, we would be lucky to do better than a 50/50 flip of the coin... so I can’t complain.
We set them up in a cardboard box filled with shredded paper. We originally had two lamps, but reduced it down to one as it was clear they were getting a bit warm.
After that, it was pretty much keeping the litter clean, keeping food and water available, and making sure the light stayed on. Annie also checked periodically to make sure their vent did not crust over... a problem we had read about.
I won’t go into details, but you would know it if you saw it.
